The O₂ Medi Portable Oxygen Concentrator is a locally developed prototype designed to address critical oxygen access gaps in underserved and rural healthcare settings. Currently in development, this modular, battery-powered unit is being engineered to align with WHO technical specifications and meet the unique challenges faced by health systems in Southern Africa.
The device will use Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) technology to deliver oxygen at a target purity of 90–95%, with an adjustable flow rate of 1–5 LPM. Designed for low-noise operation, it will integrate a digital display, fault alarms, and a rechargeable battery to ensure functionality during power outages and in off-grid environments.
O₂ Medi is currently working toward ISO 13485 certification, in collaboration with CSIR MeDDIC and other technical partners. Initial pilot deployments are planned in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal, supported by digital training and predictive maintenance tools via Mediflow AI.
This innovation is part of our broader commitment to equitable, locally built medical oxygen solutions aligned with SDG 3.
